Being natural xanthine alkaloid caffeine is considered a drug or psychoactive substance that works by stimulating the nervous system. As a result we feel more alert and energetic. It is usually found in fruits, beans and leaves and is an ingredient of caffeine drinks (i.e. coffee, tea). This is the reason why people are so keen on drinking these beverages. Though, caffeine’s stimulating effect is not a long-lasting one it is definitely able to increase the mental alertness enough for certain purposes. When the effect wears of, it is replaced by the feelings of fatigue and sleepiness. This may trigger the necessity for more caffeine intake and it becomes a habit, an addiction. It is not as innocent as it seems, however. Excess of caffeine is able to evoke headaches and is fraught with other side-effects like insomnia, nausea and vomiting, depression, irritability, heartburn, constipation and diarrhea. Refraining from caffeine intake can cause abstinence syndrome if a person got used to it too much.

For a long time caffeine withdrawal symptoms were neglected but nowadays it is not so any more and caffeine addiction is given full attention. As it has already been said caffeine is able to cause headaches, in some cases quite severe and long-lasting (up to 24 hours). Headache is also one of the withdrawal symptoms. Other symptoms like insomnia, muscle stiffness, depressive states can last up to 9 days and this is a reason to be troubled.

Good news that caffeine addiction is usually is not as strong as alcohol, nicotine or drug one therefore it is easier for a person to bear withdrawal symptoms and to get rid of the addiction. The main thing here to do is not to stop the intake suddenly but to reduce caffeine amount gradually. Gradual approach can help to relieve withdrawal symptoms.

Another way to relieve the condition is to drink plenty of water. The latter will reduce the intensity of adverse effects and decaffeinated beverages will suppress the urge to drink natural coffee. However, if headaches do not pass and are quite severe it is recommended to take some pain-relievers. Sufficient rest and sleep together with a balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables will do a lot of help. In general, it is recommended to be more concerned about the daily allowance.

Withdrawal symptoms from caffeine generally do not last more than several days. With the proper treatment they will subside after 4 or 5 days. Patience and an attempt of a healthier lifestyle will be required.

Withdrawal symptoms can be also helped by doing some mild workouts. It will be as well effective for stress and anxiety relief. If you do not like aerobics you can try yoga, or meditation, whatever you choose it will do, exercises will assist in fighting headaches and other symptoms and it will also strengthen your body.

Iron deficiency anemia is considered an advanced form of iron deficiency. Anemia is a condition of insufficient amount of iron which does not allow hemoglobin formation. Why is it so important? Because hemoglobin that generates red blood cells in its turn is in charge of oxygen transportation through the body. When it fails to supply oxygen it leads to a disorder.

Iron deficiency is not a condition that happens out of the blue; contrariwise it develops gradually and has stages. The first one is characterized by the reduction of iron in the body followed by decrease of hemoglobin and oxygen accordingly. It is better if anemia is diagnosed in this stage for the proper treatment to be carried out. Though, it is not always to be the case as the symptoms are frequently vague and are therefore overlooked. Such neglect is in its turn fraught with complications – it leads to iron deficiency anemia. It has been recorded that adult women and young children are more frequently affected by the condition than men.

The condition has certain symptoms and signs. It is individual, of course, but some people may have a severe condition while others only mild the symptoms are the same.

The first and most characteristic sign is fatigue. It originates from the scarcity of oxygen that leads to decrease in energy and feeling of constant tiredness. Another symptom is sleepiness. This happens again due to the lack of oxygen and general decrease of energy levels. Giddiness also accompanies the condition. Again, lack of oxygen is the reason why organs fail to work properly, and in this certain case it ends up with a head going round. A person with iron deficiency will probably suffer from shortness of breath and also sleep apnea. In the latter case shortness of breath daily can be followed by the same sensations during the night with scarceness of oxygen. One more symptom – angular chelitis. This condition represents an inflammation at the corners of people’s mouths and is supposed to be caused by a fungal infection, which is unlikely as iron deficiency is a real cause.

The condition can be helped with the use of some simple recommendations. Iron rich foods are the main thing that should be included into your daily allowance. They are eggs, almonds, prune juice, leafy vegetables and so on. In the cases when a body has difficulty absorbing iron vitamin C administration is prescribed. The best thin to prevent the condition is to be careful about your health and take preventive measures at least what concerns food consumed. It is equally important not to neglect the symptoms if there is any suspicion at such.

Cataract is an eye disease that causes blindness. When cataract occurs the lens of the eye is interfered with an opaque area that does not allow to see clearly. The condition is characteristic to strike people over 40. The most probable causes of it is considered excess of sun, aging, smoking, problems of metabolic character, adverse effect of some medications, former eye problems or illnesses, also a family history of cataract.

If we compare our eyes to a camera we will see that the mechanism of their functioning is just the same. Provided the lens in a camera is spoilt, if there is dirt or a fracture in there, it will not be able to produce a clear image; the same goes with our eyes. With cataract affecting the eyes they are unable to recognize the picture and identify it. This is a very uncomfortable feeling and the problem can be very disturbing in a daily life.

The onset of the illness is usually not tangible. The vision in the eye gradually becomes interfered with some opaque or cloudy area. It results in cloudy and blurred vision due to this affected area; it becomes difficult to read and concentrate; it also becomes hard to perceive bright light. The condition is also characterized by the decay of color and night vision and in some cases appearance of multiple vision.

If you experience any symptoms and have suspicion of cataract go check with your ophthalmologist. There are various tests that diagnose the condition. They are slit lamp evaluation, also glare test, potential vision test, contrast sensitivity test, etc. and others.

The condition is usually treated by surgery: it is removed. The procedure is only carried out after the blurred and cloudy area becomes so dense that a person is unable to see at all. Otherwise cataract is waited until it becomes mature. A surgery generally represents a removal of the lens of the eye and a replacement of it with an artificial one. The operation does not represent any risk for health and is not usually fraught with complications. It improves patients’ vision and reduces the need in spectacles.

Cataract can be caused by various reasons none of them stated for sure but it is better to prevent the condition in order not to treat it afterwards. Do take care of your eyes, review your lifestyle and habits and consider cataract risk factors. If there are some better avoid them. Mind that smoking and excess of sunlight are things that your eyes do not like.

Wisdom teeth are called the third teeth (molars). They are known to appear after all the rest and bear such a name because they erupt in late teens or even early twenties when a person admittedly and eventually becomes wise. There are supposed to be four of them; but there can be three, or none. Frequently they lead to the condition when a mouth is overcrowded and cause various dental problems.

The condition is characterized by the certain symptoms. First of all, the person feels irritation in the mouth, then – pain. When a wisdom tooth starts to grow, it can make the cheek swell. In general the infection that is found around a wisdom tooth is called pericoronitis. This infection is liable to spread further and affect other areas like throat therefore causing sour throat and nausea. Infection is also able to evoke pus around gyms. The latter become often red, inflamed and swollen. Further from the throat lymph glands can also be affected. A person will find it difficult to brush the teeth and make chewing movements without feeling some pain. Cysts or tumors can also be frequently found around wisdom teeth. In some cases their growth is accompanied with headaches; almost always – with bad breath.

This is not a very pleasant condition and there is no necessity to endure it without a relief. There are pain medications that simply relieve the suffering. Moreover warm salt water is a good help for the gyms. If the pain is severe you can apply for the help of antibiotics; but consult your doctor before taking any. Regular dental check-ups will help to prevent the condition and cure it in early stage of development. Wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth and are quickly ruined; very frequently they are removed because there is no exact necessity in them and they just cause pain. In some cases they require surgical removal.

The best way to avoid undesired conditions is to take care about your teeth and gyms, strictly specking practice good dental hygiene.

Paralysis represents a temporary or permanent condition when a person cannot move one or more muscle. The paralyzed area of the body is also characterized by the loss of sensibility. Permanent paralysis usually occurs when the nervous system is damaged.

Generally the condition is evoked by a stroke or trauma happened to the nervous system or the brain. Poliomyelitis and a number of other illnesses can lead to the condition as well as botulism, paralytic shellfish poisoning, and some poisons (especially the ones affecting the nervous system).

Paralyses can be of different types which depend on what evoked it. For instance, Bell’s palsy causes localized paralysis. In this case only a small area of the person’s body is affected. Unilateral paralysis stands for a condition when only one side of the body is immovable; when both are affected the paralysis is called bilateral. Weakness in the whole body after a stroke causes global paralysis; means weakness affecting on one side of the body is called hemiplegia.

Injury to the spinal cord evokes the severest kind of paralysis. Damage to the lower spinal cord is able to lead to paraplegia when either legs or arms are immovable. In some severe cases when a person can not even eat, he or she has to be feed with the help of feeding tubes.

Spinal cord injury that leads to paralysis is a frequent result of a car accident, gunshot, or falling. Other possible reasons that can trigger the condition are certain diseases (Lou Gehrig’s as well) and cases of medical malpractice, too.

Spinal cord injury can have different range of severity depending on the type of injury. There are differentiated a complete injury and an incomplete one. The former means that there is no sensation below the level of damage and no movement; it is also characterized by the symmetry of the paralyses – both sides are affected equally. The latter means that a patient may be able to move one limb more than another and even feel some of the paralyzed parts; paralysis is also characterized by asymmetry – one side is affected more than the other.

Paralysis is a very hard and trying condition both for a person who suffers from it and his relatives and friends; especially if it is diagnosed as permanent. If the reason of the condition is medical malpractice, falling, botulism, accident involving a moving vehicle, medication after-effect or clinical tests you have got a right to bring a lawsuit. This will not make the whole thing easier but at least may help with the treatment funds.

Meniere’s disease got its name after the French physician Prosper Meniere. It is a condition connected with the inner ear and the fluid balancing regulating system in it. This illness represents a following combination of conditions: episodic vertigo, tinnitus, aural pressure and temporary hearing loss. It usually starts with the increase of pressure in one ear building up to tinnitus and leads frequently to hearing loss. Vertigo is usually unexpected and gives no notice; it is able to last few hours but can make a patient suffer for several days as well. Generally, improvement in hearing comes after the vertigo attack recedes.

Meniere’s disease symptoms:

vertigo (sensation of whirling –      the major symptom; frequently evokes vomiting, severe nausea and      sweating);

tinnitus (ringing in the ear);

a loss of hearing;

a feeling of pressure in the affected ear.

Several steps are necessary in order to diagnose the condition. If you suffer from above mentioned symptoms apply for your physician for help. Your healthcare provider will make you undergo a check-up and will be interested in some other aspects of your health. Therefore tell him if you have a history of mumps, syphilis, an autoimmune disorder, inflammation of the eyes, allergy or have had ear surgery recently, if you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, high blood cholesterol and thyroid; it is equally important to make your doctor aware of any neurologic or emotional disorders you have. In order to create a full picture of your illness the information about your condition is needed, which means how long you suffer from it and how often, also how hard the attacks are.

There are also other tests aimed to diagnose the condition, for example, electronystagmograph (ENG). It is intended for the testing of your balance. Also tests for hearing and some other tests are carried out. They include computer tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electrocochleography (ECoG), and auditory brain response (ABR).

Unfortunately, the condition has no cure so far. But nevertheless there are some preventive measures that can help; changes in a diet and daily allowance are among them. It is also recommended to stop smoking and avoid stress.

Is the condition is severe and makes a person suffer a lot there are other measures such as surgical procedures. Labyrinthectomy is one of them. During this operation the inner ear sense organ is removed; but this kind of surgery is indicated only for patients with hearing loss in the affected ear only. Another type of surgery is vestibular neurectomy. It represents a separation of a certain nerve from the affected ear. This measure is able to help controlling vertigo but also can be fraught with complications such as hearing loss.

The best thing you can do in case of attack is to lay flat on some surface and keep your eyes on something stationary. It is recommended to refrain from eating and drinking and abrupt movements. When the attack reduces try to get up very slowly. This experience is very tiring and your organism will, probably, require some prolonged sleep. Do not hesitate and contact your doctor provided your vertigo does not let go more that 24 hours and is accompanied with constant vomiting.

Compulsive shopping disorder refers to obsessive compulsive disorders and has a more popular name of shopaholism. The meaning is simple – addiction to shopping and spending.

You will unmistakably recognize the symptoms when you see that your cupboard won’t close and you find there things that you have never worn and some of them you do not even remember. All those dresses, bags, accessories and other things you spend money on not really requiring them – you buy all this, mostly, to relieve your stress and depression. Tell yourself honestly – are you doing this? If yes, then, perhaps, you are on the way to the condition

It won’t be a mistake if I say that this disorder as any kind of addiction is addictive as well as destructive. The habit to buy everything you see regardless the need is fraught with consequences. It causes debts, loans, financial hardships and sometimes even crimes. The most frequent this condition is among women who can be found in a mall much more often then men and are more liable to thoughtless bargains. It is also typical for patients with compulsive shopping disorder to plan and make a list of the things they are going to buy. As this condition is more characteristic for women it does not mean that every other is a shopoholic – women just love shopping; but there are severe cases and they really need to be treated for the sake of avoiding the future undesired complications.

The condition of compulsive shopping requires and can be attended before complications appear.

If you feel that you cannot resist the desire to buy by yourself and your voice of conscience so strong and powerful at home becomes weak and easily persuaded in the mall, call your relatives and friends for help. This is the first recommendation. Do not go shopping alone or with people who have the same kind of addiction; instead take a mother or a very practical friend – they won’t definitely let you buy more than you need.

Another advice – shun shopping malls. They are the worst place to treat your condition imaginable! The same goes with internet shopping. Better choose small stores that will not provide the temptation.

A shopping list will be a good and handy thing as well. Write down all the things you require in the shop and buy in accordance. Stick to your list and do not look at things that are not present there.

Even better and more effective recommendation is to limit the amount of cash you carry with you around and leave at home your credit cards – this measure will simply won’t give you a chance to buy more than you can pay.

Follow this simple advice and if you really want to get rid of the addiction you will manage it. Shopaholism is not the best thing for your finances and I’m sure that you can spend money on something better than a tenth pair of shoes that you do not need actually. If you are already midway into the condition try to use the above given recommendations and you will see the change, you will feel free from addiction. You will like it.

Good news for those who decided to quit smoking – you have an alternative. It is simple and it is considered harmless for health. We are talking about herbal cigarettes. They are known to contain neither tobacco nor nicotine and are constituted only of natural ingredients. These cigarettes are of great assistance provided you’ve made up your mind to quit smoking. There exist different opinions on the account of their value and innocence but nonetheless these debates do not make them a tiny bit less popular.

Why are herbal cigarettes considered harmless and is it really so? First of all they are free from all the chemicals and substances characteristic for normal cigarettes – nicotine and tobacco. Instead into their content are included various herbs and natural products (i.e. passion flowers, rose petals, red clover flowers, marshmallow leaves, and etc.). You can find them in any flavor to your taste: lemon grass, mint, cinnamon, rose, salvia, and what not. Also some of the herbal cigarettes can contain psychoactive substances, though it is not characteristic and rare. Ingredients like vanilla, jasmine, ginseng, or menthol can also be added to enrich the flavor of cigarettes. Cigarettes are made from powdered herbs that are further mixed with liquid clarified butter. After the mixture is made it is poured into paper tubes, which, in their turn, are finished with filter tips and stored into packs and boxes.

Herbal cigarettes do have several advantages against the normal ones. They are safer and healthier and can replace cigarettes for those who decided to stop smoking. Many adherents and followers say that herbal cigarettes ingredients can even heal illnesses and improve health. There are also opinions that such smoking improves voice quality and soothes the throat, also relieves digestion. Moreover herbal cigarettes provide soothing effect on nerves.

Therefore there are other opinions. They claim that any smoke that is inhaled is dangerous. The fact that herbal cigarettes do not contain nicotine does not interfere with them to produce tar, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. These substances do not only do harm for health but for environment as well. There is also a greater risk of starting smoking them among women and teenagers due to the fact that they are nicotine-free.

Various brands offer herbal cigarettes with different flavors. They can be smoked instead of normal cigarettes but still smoking is not good in any manifestation.

They say that teenage period is the most complicated, and well, it is. There are so many thoughts and emotions all mixed in one teenage head that no surprise it starts to spin round at times. It is a trying time when a young parson learns to form own opinions and guide with own principles (or better to choose whether to follow others or to go own way). But this period is one of a hardship for parents as well. Rare parents have lived through it without troubles and strain. And in the list of teenage problems the one of drinking is not the last (together with smoking, drugs and drunken driving).

What makes teenagers choose this path? Why do they choose alcohol? This is not something one can consciously desire and long for, something that one would willingly plan. But nevertheless there are reasons for early teenage alcoholism and not even one; sometimes they may seem trifling to adults but it is definitely not so for teenagers.

Among the most common reasons is the parents’ example. If in a family a mother and a father have a habit to rely on a bottle there is no guarantee that a child will not follow their path. Parents are examples for imitation and a child learns from them what is good and what is bad; they set patterns of behaviour and frequently children stick to them. So, if a father or a mother finds solace from the troubles in alcohol, then, perhaps, there is something in it, a teenager thinks, and seeks it there too.

Another reason for teenage drinking is imitation. Or better to say the desire not to be rejected and accepted into this or that group or some subculture. For a teenager his or her peers’ opinion and judgment is extremely important; a class or a band what a teenager mingles with represents a referential group which opinion and rules have influence. Therefore if drinking and partying is intrinsic and welcome there and a teenager wants to be accepted he or she will probably follow the general pattern and start drinking. It is considered cool and a teenager who is doing like the rest will not feel rejected. This fact is essential as well as the other that teenagers often underestimate the force of the habit they form.

A very essential reason of drinking (and not just teenage) is a desire to escape the rough and tough reality. When it concerns teenagers the latter may feel tired of all the varied experience they get from life, often cruel and unjust, that they seek escape and find it – temporary but nevertheless effective. That is also why many teenagers turn to drugs as well.

Some parents just underestimate the force of effect that relationship problems can produce on a teenager. Some of these parents were happy enough not to know and the rest seem to forget how unreturned love feels. And they are mistaken here because such strong feelings and disappointments can lead far and cause such a pain that alcohol seems be quite to the point turning everything into a blur and saving from the cruel reality.

The worst thing about it all is that a teenager does not really realize that he or she becomes addicted. The habit forms quite soon; it can start from weekends with beer and then grow into every evening with beer and eventually lead to a condition when a person starts to feel addiction, when he or she actually needs alcohol regularly. Alcoholism is dangerous in any age but for a teenager it is twice as dangerous – this is the very age when the future is forming.

That is why it is important for the parents to check unobtrusively on their kids and be abreast of all the youngsters’ activities. The best way to do it is to be friends with own children otherwise you will never know your child’s real thoughts and opinions. Remember that teenagers need guidance but not in the way you, perhaps, understand it. Be careful about the way you speak and the things you ask and the things you require; do not humiliate; remember yourself in this age and do not repeat the mistakes of your parents.

There are so many people who are addicted to fast food that it is really frightening. People do not realize they are addicted but continue to crave for their favourite stuff.

You might be surprised but many of us are fast food addicts. Really, someone especially in the expert circles will argue with it but it’s true. What concerns the Americans it is more than 100% true: otherwise all this love for fries and hamburgers – what is it if not addiction?

What is addiction and what is actually understood under the notion? It is easier to explain if you imagine something you like so much that it makes you disconcerted and irritated and even ill to some extent if or when you do not get it. You will also realize that you are addicted when you know you want to end up with this habit and find it difficult and then – give up and proceed. This is addiction when all the bad and harmful effects are not taken into consideration.

Now let’s get back to your favourite junk food. Addiction itself is one thing; another is that you cannot stop, and neither your weight can: it increases in direct progression. And you become overweight and in more pitiable cases even obese. But still you cannot stop as your stupid mind goes on telling you that this is the tastiest thing in the world and the best gustatory sense you can get. And you believe and continue; and become more upset about your weight; and through this indulge yourself even more as this is the only thing that gives you pleasure…

Do you really like such a story? I bet you do not. I think that you would like to do something about it. It is a shame that there are no such programs aimed to rehabilitate a person with fast food addiction. It’s high time to recognize the problem and admit that it exists. However, at present people have nothing in support apart from their will. It is very hard to get rid of this addiction but for those who want to try here are some recommendations.

To start with, a sufferer should admit the fact that he or she is actually addicted, that the problem exists. In order to annihilate the enemy one should know what to fight. And this is, in fact, not an easy thing to do. Majority of people will say that this is just load of rubbish and everything is ok with them and occasional coke and fries is not addiction. But once you admit the case it is easier to deal with it. The next step should be strong determination to kick the habit. Then it is better and more efficient to adhere to “positive quitting” scheme rather than trying to quit abruptly (the chances are vague that you succeed with the latter). The scheme means that you try to do things gradually: do without fast food one day, then two days, and so on. You will definitely feel the urges to go and eat something from your former favourite list but try to be persistent. Remember that it is in your mind: your organism does not really need this stuff. And this is only because once you have found it delicious it seems to be so. There are so many other foods no less and even more tasty; and a lot healthier as well. Your organism will only be grateful and you will literally see the difference.
