Gluten represents some type of storage protein of cereal family therefore it is an ingredient of grains. Glutenin and gliadin, the two proteins, constitute gluten and are bound by it. Rye, barley, spelt and wheat generally contain gluten. Low protein foods contain it in full and we can get it from there. It is also used as the food additive that is able to provide the texture and elasticity to the food according to your desire. It happens so, however, that not everyone can consume gluten without problems. There are people who can not digest it and tolerate and they are supposed to have gluten intolerance.

Gluten allergy is not the same as food allergy and they have different consequences as well. Gluten allergy is fraught with gastro intestinal distress that harms the small intestine. Another name for the condition is celiac disease and it can not be treated, unfortunately. Gluten allergy is divided into several following conditions named accordingly silent celiac disease, refractory celiac disease, latent celiac disease and collagenous celiac disease.

The condition of gluten intolerance has got the following symptoms:

any wheat products, barley, rye and oats can not be digested by a person and, if they are consumed, vomiting, abdominal bloating, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, flatulence, abdominal pain and dyspepsia are possible;

other probable complications are headache, mouth ulcers, muscle cramps or a tingling sensation in the legs, depression and irritability;

gluten allergy also causes eczema, skin hives, skin allergies, dermatitis, asthma or breathing difficulties;

changes of weight are also frequent;

dental problems as well;

children can suffer from such symptoms as malnutrition and slow growth, attention and behavioral problems, irritability, anemia and depression.

The condition should not be neglected otherwise it is fraught with such severe complications as crohns disease, osteoporosis, diverticulitis, and cancer. Remember that these are grains responsible for causing allergy. Try fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts in your diet more. You can only relieve your allergy be sticking to a gluten free diet. It is not really hard, though, will require some getting used to and effort but it is the only way to fight the condition.

Melena is a condition when there is blood on the upper gastrointestinal tract or the right colon. The blood passes through due to its inability to stay in a body for a certain period and therefore it becomes visible and colors the stool in red.

Sometimes the bleeding is fast but in those cases when it is slow it is not so easy to notice and it is called occult. Such cases require certain tests like the ones when the stool is tarry. Anemia is frequently associated with such cases when a lot of iron is lost through the blood.

There are certain conditions that evoke Melena.

Among them there is gastritis. It is a very frequent condition that happens when the stomach linen becomes inflamed.

Another reason can be esophageal varices. The condition is a serious one and also severe. The blood leaks from the ruptured veins and then is seen in the stool or can be vomited out.

Melena can be also a consequence of bleeding ulcers. The latter appear in the result of ‘Helicobacter pylori’ bacteria activity.

The condition can be triggered by long-term use of NSAIDs.

A severe condition of Mallory-Weiss syndrome, which is usually accompanied with vomiting, coughing or epileptic convulsions, can lead the condition, too.

Melena is frequent in new-born babies who have swallowed maternal blood. But this condition is temporary and heals soon.

You will know that you have a condition if your stool is black in color. Also a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) can identify the condition. In some cases other diagnostic tests can be necessary. Some of them are colonoscopy, x-rays, a culture of the stool and gastroscopy.

Nevertheless keep in mind that the condition of a black stool can be evoked by various reasons like foods, drug administration and minerals (i.e. blueberries, black licorice, lead and bismuth). In this case the condition is known as ‘False Melena’. Otherwise if you cannot make a connection of a black stool and the foods you have recently consumed consult a doctor.

Melena is not something to have a real much worry about as soon as you know the reasons. It is absolutely curable. Therefore if you have some disturbing symptoms apply for help and you will be fine.

Our life is not the same as it was even some years ago – the tempo has increased a lot and we seem always to be in a hurry. Sometimes we do not have enough time to communicate normally and we move a lot around and eat when there is time and mostly something that is quick to prepare and not healthy at all. There is no surprise that our body react to this challenge. In the condition of unbalanced diet and fast food heartburn is not a rare thing.

Let’s have a look at the list of foods that can trigger the condition.

First of all theses are acidic foods like tomatoes. They are able to cause heartburn as well as fruits that are high on citrus (i.e. grapefruit, lemons, and oranges). Do not eat too much of mustard and vinegar as they can evoke the condition, too.

Another sure way to have heartburn is to consume too much of fatty or fried foods, or dairy products. Everything what is cottage cheese, butter biscuits, French fries, fried meat, vegetables, etc. should be abstained.

Aerated drinks and coffee are big triggers of the condition as well as caffeine-containing drinks and products. Therefore if you are liable to have heartburn avoid such stuff (and nice chocolate brownies, too).

Do not drink alcohol or at least lessen its amount in your daily allowance if you want to relieve your condition or prevent it.

The same goes with spices. If you have heartburn and like spicy foods then, unfortunately, you will have to abandon it for your own good.

In some cases meats and grains can lead to heartburn; therefore if you cannot live without meat try lean one and avoid excessive fat in it.

Heartburn can also be helped with a chewing gym because it assists in the production of saliva that relieves it.

But apart from the changes in diet other alternations should be made. They concern the lifestyle habits. It is recommended to eat small portions of foods instead of big ones; eating process should be slow and not hasty. A little exercise will also be very beneficial. One more useful reminder is not to eat late at night and directly before going to bed; avoid tight night clothes.

The gallbladder is located under the liver and stores bile secreted by it. The bile has a function of assistant during the process of fats emulsifying and digestion. When this process is disturbed the gallbladder does not empty enough and this evokes cholesterol crystallization and further on – the appearance of gallstones.

They evoke because of the bile retention from the gallbladder for a period of time. Another reason is excessive cholesterol and calcium that gather together in the gallbladder.

Cholesterol is the most typical cause of gallstone formation therefore they are generally yellow, green and whine in color and they are called cholesterol stones.80% of all stones are cholesterol stones. Another type of stones are pigment stones and they are dark and brown in color because they are highly concentrated in bile pigments as well as calcium salts that is why they can be seen by the X-ray.

Aging is the factor that can trigger the condition of gallstones more apparently. Family history is the most likely factor as well. If you have had a condition of hemolysis or chronic and inflammatory disorders of the colon you are much likely to develop the condition. Unhealthy and unbalanced diet that contains a lot of cholesterol and fats is also able to lead to the appearance of gallstones as well as obesity and diabetes. Women, and especially those in the state of pregnancy, are the most probable high-risk category.

There are ways to reduce the risk of gallstone appearance and this includes first of all healthy diet. The best way to keep it like this is to exclude from your daily allowance everything rich in cholesterol and fats and include more fiber, vegetables and fruits. These foods are very important because they are the ones responsible for elimination of cholesterol that leads to stones formation. Another important preventive measure is physical workouts.

Gallstones as a condition should not be taken for granted. The illness is fraught with complications such as cirrhosis of the liver. The condition can also lead to inflammation of the gallbladder, or cholecystitis, also pancreatitis or cholangitis. Cases of jaundice or cancer developed from gallstone condition are also known.

GERD, or acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease stands for the condition when the liquid content of the stomach backs up into the esophagus. As a result this liquid evokes inflammation and damage of the esophagus lining. The main components of this liquid are acid and pepsin produced by the stomach. The former is considered very injurious as well as the latter (combined with bile) though not at such extent.

The condition of GERD is considered chronic as well as any kind of injury caused to the lining of the esophagus. The treatment usually bears indefinite character (in some cases it can be intermittent); but as soon as the illness can last through one’s life the therapy is required as well.

The reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus is a norm for both healthy people and patients with GERD, actually. The only difference is that in the case of GERD the liquid contains a much larger amount of acid that injures the lining and the reflux goes higher in the esophagus.

However, the organism is built in such a way that it creates defense from such harm as reflux and acid. Reflux mostly happens in the daytime when a person stays in an upright position and this makes the liquid go down back into the stomach (the effect of gravity). Swallow movements also assist in taking reflux back to the stomach. Also, a person’s saliva contains bicarbonate. When it goes down the esophagus bicarbonate neutralizes the acid.

Therefore there are three mechanisms of organism self-defense: gravity, swallowing, and saliva. The only drawback is that they are effective provided the person preserves upright position. Should a person go to sleep they do not work any more. Saliva is less produced, a person does not swallow and is not that much affected by gravity therefore letting reflux occur more often and acid damages the lining more.

There are some states that make GERD more probable. Pregnancy is among them as an increased hormone level and growing fetus evoke reflux in some way. Another condition is scleroderma, or connective tissue disease, that slackens the esophageal muscles can be a cause of GERD.

There are no special terms to describe hemorrhoids but they are generally described as widening of hemorrhoid veins of the lower part of the rectum causing cushions and often characterized by bleeding. It is wrong to suppose the condition abnormal as it can be found in many people. It is nevertheless considered an illness only when the hemorrhoidal cushions enlarge and evoke pain and discomfort.

These are arteries that create a wide network in the anal area and they supply blood for hemorrhoidal blood vessels. Due to them the hemorrhoidal bleeding is bright red and not dark (in case of venous blood); it is also the reason why it is so severe.

There are two types of the condition distinguished according to the placement of it. Internal hemorrhoid takes place at the top of the anal canal, while external hemorrhoid is located lower on the anal canal near the anus.

The actual reasons for the appearance of the condition have not been investigated yet. There exist several theories but none of them have any appropriate experimental support. They include the assumption that inadequate intake of fiber, prolonged sitting on the toilet, and chronic constipation can be responsible for hemorrhoids. Pregnancy and tumors in the pelvis evoke the condition as well.

The condition can be treated but people who suffer from it should keep in mind that it is not a matter of a single day. It is crucial to know that constipation can worsen the condition as well as diarrhea. The patients are advised to soften their stools by increasing the amount of fiber in their daily allowance as this will relieve the symptoms. It is also beneficial to eat more healthy products, avoid excess of salt, sugar and spices, practice some exercises and activities (especially if your lifestyle involves sedentary work a lot) and reduce the intake of alcohol.

Hemorrhoids may be treated by minor surgery, if the case is severe, and conventionally by the usage of some natural means or medications. The latter are broadly available without a prescription in every pharmacy. They include various ointments, creams, suppositories, gels, foams, and pads and are presupposed to relieve the symptoms of itching, burning and discomfort.

Gastritis is a well-known condition and many people suffer from it. It can be described as irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. In some mild cases a person may not even be aware of it; but there are also more severe forms; and also chronic ones. In order to be sure that you have this very condition it is important to know the symptoms as they are confusing sometimes.

A severe inflammation can show no sign at all and be not very troublesome when a minor one is able to be very painful. The best way to prove your suspicions (if you have some) is to undergo an endoscopic examination of the stomach. This will help to lessen the possibility of any other illnesses.

The condition is very tricky in the case of elderly people therefore they should be careful as they may appear in the hospital with internal bleeding not even having been troubled with any sign of gastritis during the whole life once.

About 10% of people who complain of pain in the stomach are sure to have gastritis. The first sign of it – pain in the upper abdominal region.

The gastritis pain can be felt in the pit of the stomach, or it can be a cutting pain from front to back. You may feel soreness, cutting or burning sensation, it depends. Gastritis is also accompanied with belching, nausea, vomiting (bloody, too), bloating and other unpleasant feelings.

In the case of severe gastritis stomach bleeding is possible. The condition may be supposed if there are the following symptoms present: sudden sweating, uneven heart beat, paleness, also acute pain in chest and stomach, etc. But the main sign is vomiting blood.

Black stools, stomach cramps, fever or apathy, indigestion, diarrhea, also belching can as well be symptoms of gastritis.

Nevertheless all the above mentioned symptoms may be found in a person who suffer from gastritis as well as not. In some cases it is discovered when the severest condition developed. This generally happens to people over sixty and evoked often by alcohol abuse or some medications administration.
