Arthritis means an illness involving damage to the joints of the body. It is very painful as wearing away of joints make bones contact directly and every movement becomes unbearable. Among other types of the condition finger and thumb arthritis are the most frequent. There are three bones and three joints that constitute a finger and if arthritis has attacked them it can considerably complicate your daily life. There are differentiated two types of finger arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The former is responsible for rapid degeneration of joint cartilage; it is as well prone to influence the joints at the knuckles and joints at the base of the thumb. In the case of the latter the synovial membrane that lines the joints becomes inflamed causing a systemic degradation of the cartilage and anklyosis.

The symptoms of the condition are joint pain, swelling and stiffness of fingers. Lumps around the knuckles are also frequent in case of osteophytes development. Rheumatoid arthritis patients can suffer from deformities, or ulnar drifts. It is a condition when the affected finger tends to point sideways and not straight.

Anti-inflammatory medications are usually used for the treatment of the condition and also cortisone injections. But the latter can be recommended only by a doctor.

For the treatment of the condition occupational and physical therapy are used. This is non-operative treatment and it is designed to relieve pain. The therapy also presupposes a number of arthritic finger exercises. Arthritic water exercises are done to the affected part and are very useful and helpful.

Another treatment method is the fusion of joint bones where the individual bones are allowed to grow and fuse to become one. This method presupposes surgery and cannot guarantee that bones will not fuse completely. It is also fraught with the permanent loss of movement in these bones. In some cases joint replacement surgery can be required.

Arthritis can be helped a lot by maintaining a proper diet. All in all it is important to follow all the recommendations and take prescribed treatment in order to relieve and cure the condition.

The existence of arthritis in children is doubted by some people and even doctors. Nevertheless the condition happens and the fact that it is rare doesn’t make it unimportant. Sometimes children have to suffer for months and years before they are relieved. The greatest problem is that adults can be oblivious of the condition because of the superstition that arthritis is a characteristic of old age and not children. So little is known about the symptoms and progress of the illness in such early age that by the time when the diagnosis is stated it can be too late for any treatment.

Arthritis in children is not a common condition. It affects one child from 1,000 a year and in most cases it flows mildly, although severe cases are also known. The most frequent reason of arthritis appearance in children is earlier experience of a viral or bacterial infection. In this case the condition is severe but it relieves soon enough. Contrariwise juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, or JRA, is an almost chronic condition and it is able to preserve for a long time. Other names are juvenile arthritis, juvenile arthritis of unknown cause or juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis has three main forms according to the way how it starts. They are: pauciarticular, a condition when less than four joints are affected; polyarticular, when four or more joints are influenced; and systemic-onset, which means inflammation of the joints accompanied with high fevers and rash.

But juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is not the only condition of the kind that can affect children. JRA is more often met in younger children while other conditions are more common for older ages and teenagers. They are: rheumatoid factor-positive arthritis, when the small joints in the hands and feet are affected a little, and spondyloarthropathy. The later is in the same family with arthritis though it differs in the way that it affects large joints (i.e. hips). It is also remarkable because of its asymmetric character (the bodily parts are affected asymmetrically) and the fact that the inflammation takes place not only in the joints but also touches tendons and ligaments.

In some cases psoriasis can also lead to development of the condition named psoriatic arthritis. But as long as psoriasis usually affects several members of the family, it makes the case easier to be diagnosed.

Arthritis is not a best condition to go in for sports but a little exercise will do no harm if practiced with care. The best way to start is get a consultation from your doctor or apply for a good physician. Arthritis does not mean that the road to sport is closed forever; it is just much wiser to check what sports and exercises will be beneficial and which ones may be fraught with additional pain and trouble. Most people with arthritis start with some easy range-of-motion exercises and light aerobics.

Why it is better to go and ask a specialist? Because only doctor will be able to advise you the most appropriate exercise program in accordance with your individual case. The therapist will also recommend you with what to start, how to relieve pain, how to protect your joints and save energy, he or she will also teach you how to place your body in different cases so that the risk of pain or further complications was minimum.

So, when you decide to start any training there are the following things to do:

First of all consult your doctor and discuss what your exercises are going to be like. It will be better if your first trainings will be supervised by a physical therapist or qualified trainer. It is also recommended to apply heat to the joints; this is a good start for training if you have arthritis.

Start with range-of-motion exercises by stretching and warming-up. Then proceed with strengthening exercises. Do not take big weights, you may get hurt. Do not get hasty, do the exercises slowly. When you finish your exercises apply cold packs if you fell the need. Then you can add some aerobic exercises.

Make sure you add recreational exercise after all the previous ones (range-of-motion, strengthening, and aerobics). Otherwise there is a great risk of injury.

If you feel that doing exercises takes a lot effort, if it becomes painful and causes swelling and inflammations, flag and try to find out the reason.

Consider the next signs and if you experience them check with your doctor for advice and help. This refers to the following: if you feel constantly exhausted and weak, have troubles with moving, your joints swell and the pain lasts linger than an hour.

Find the most suitable and pleasant program and enjoy it.

Under the term of rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, stands an inflammatory disease that affects the joints, tissues and organs of the body causing inflammation and severe pain. Unlike osteoarthritis, which attacks only joints, RA’s field of influence is much broader. It causes inflammation in legs and hands as well as in the lungs, heart and skin. Mostly people in their 40 and 50 suffer from this condition and their number is not very high.

The first symptom of the condition is inflammation of the joints in the hands, feet and cervical spine. This is what happens first. Later it can lead to further complications like synovitis. This is a condition when inflammation happens to the membranes that surround the joints. The further, the worse: the synovial lining wears off and the joints deform. It all may end up with disability.

In the case when skin is affected by RA small nodules containing lymphocytes and plasma cells appear around the joints. Sweet’s syndrome, which means thinning of the skin and its fragility, can also be a consequence of RA.

RA is also able to affect inner organs and cause plural effusions in the lungs and artherosclerosis, myocardial infarction as well, fibrosis of the lungs and also renal amyloidosis in the kidneys.

There are several ways to diagnose RA and the main are X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Blood tests are also used in the purposes of specification of arthritis types. There are also some symptoms characteristic to this very condition. They are morning stiffness that continues more than six weeks and lasts more than an hour; soft tissues swelling and nodules on bony prominences that are noticed for the same period of time; joint erosion proved by X-Ray or MRI.

The condition of RA is such that there are no cures for it yet. All that modern medicine can do is provide the sufferer with pain-relieving medications. The medicines are intended to lighten the pain from the inflammation in joints and tissues and also meat to reduce the speed of the disease progress. Cortisone and anti-rheumatic medications are the most frequently used in RA treatment as well as some anti-inflammatory drugs.

There is one more way of RA treatment and this is joint replacement surgery. Mostly it is knee that is replaced more often than the others. It is also not an absolute cure as the replacement does not prevent the disease from further development but it gradually relieves the whole condition.

There are also some alternative conditions like radon therapy, therapy with medicinal marijuana and acupuncture. Changes in a person’s daily allowance can also be of assistance, especially addition of foods rich in omega 3 oils.
