With the weakening of the immune system the body becomes more susceptible for different infections, fungal infections as well. As we know, fungi represent micro-organisms that are impossible to see with the naked eye. There are around thousands of fungi types and not all of them represent danger to a human organism. The mouth, nail, skin and the vagina are the most frequent places that fungus likes to attack, but generally, it can be any place. It is very important not to leave the condition neglected as untreated fungal infection is fraught with certain complications.
A yeast infection that takes place in the mouth, in other words, thrush happens when the immune system becomes weak. It is caused by the fungi Candida and it affects the mouth, throat and the tongue. Newborns, babies and elderly people are mostly affected by this fungal infection. Still, this condition is not a dangerous one and can be cured easily.
For this case there exist a great many of medications. They are intended either to treat the condition by applying the drug directly or by consuming it orally. The severity of infection and its recurrence define the type of the medication used and also the period. Mild thrushes can be easily treated at home. The most frequent medicines are antifungal lozenges and mouth rinses.
Toenail fungus infection is very frequent among people. Fungus or bacteria tends to develop in the dark areas of toenails and thrives on them. Do not take any medications without a consultation with your doctor. The most common medications for toenail treatment are fluconazole and terbinafine. They usually take time (6 to 12 weeks) to cure the condition.
Yeast infections are treated by the variety of tablets, ointments and creams meant for these purposes (i.e. clotrimazole, miconazole, tioconazole, terconazole and butoconazole). The most import thing about them is to undergo the whole therapy course in order for the medication to take any effect.
Keep in mind, however, that any medications have side effects and it is better to know about them in advance.
Fluconazole is used in the case of Candida. This drug can evoke allergy as an adverse effect and cause itching, swelling, swallowing or breathing problems, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Ketoconazole is nowadays used not that frequently because it proved not that effective.
Liver damage was reported after a prolonged use of antifungal drugs. Therefore if you are on such a therapy it is recommended that you check your liver frequently.
There haven’t been reported any side-effects after the usage of antifungal creams and shampoos, but cases of itching and irritation are known.
Remember, that fungal infections are not dangerous, but they require time to be healed. There are many reasons evoking fungal infections but the most frequent is improper hygiene. Therefore it is better to be careful and attentive and take some preventive measures in order not to need treatment afterwards.
