A state of depression is a complicated thing and appears much frequent than it was believed before. The problem concerns women a great deal and some percent of them will tell you that they had to seek help form antidepressants. If you carry out a research on the topic you may probably find out that women are more prone for the depressive states but you will unlikely find out why.
This is also in a woman’s nature to think that notwithstanding the severity of the state they will be able to deal with it without any outside help. Therefore they often underestimate the risk of drugs and professional psychological help. What concerns the latter it is frequent in all people that they consider themselves clever and sane enough not to allow a thought of getting a specialist consultation.
Women who have depression do really feel miserable and comparing the adverse effects of the medications (i.e. agitation, insomnia, or drowsiness) to the things they have to go through no surprise that they choose medications. But the effect could have been much better if medication therapy was combined and accompanied with some specialist supervision.
But sometimes women just do not realize that they have the condition; they do not recognize the symptoms. Many people still think that it is all about being sad and weepy. But it is actually more than that. Depression presupposes also exhaustion, sometimes insomnia, loss of interest in life and activities, lack of energy and problems with concentration and so on.
Women should know the symptoms in order to know what to do with them. They also should be well informed about all the effects and ill-effects of the medications; about all the pros and cons of the therapy. They should not be deluded by misinformation because adverse effects lessen if the remedy is taken continuously and the preparation can be changed if it fails to help. The vital thing is to follow a doctor’s advice and not practice self-treatment. It is also crucial to understand that one-time visit to a specialist and getting a prescription filled once will not resolve any problems. Successful treatment requires regular check-ups and observation of the therapy process. Only in this case side-effects can be controlled and improvement achieved.
Then goes even bigger problem. Most of the medications for depression require 4-6 weeks to start working and showing any results. This is a very hard time for a patient because no visible or felt effect is observed just the above mentioned adverse effects. Both the woman and her physician will have to discuss the expected duration of treatment and the peculiarities of it. In cases when the treatment is undergone not for the first time the treatment can even take more time and therefore be more hard and challenging to bear.
Why is it harder for a woman to bear depression? Because in addition to other social roles and common responsibilities a women is also a mother and all the basic childcare concerns are still mainly performed by her. So as they have to balance work and childcare it even causes more stress and ends up with unpredictable mood changes, crying, or anger at work. Moreover states of pregnancy or nursing also cannot be taken for granted corresponding to the topic of medications. Men and women are affected differently in this aspect and therefore women should get as much help as they can if there is a necessity.
The thing is that the best way to deal with the condition is to combine medications and psychotherapy. Public education will also be of much assistance as more women will be able to recognize the symptoms of depression and what to do with it. Cured depression will give you a chance for a better and a healthier life and women deserve it.
