What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is caused by the fungus called Trichophyton. It activates in the state when feet are wet and warm and irritated. Though fungal infections are more frequent on feet they can appear also on other parts of the body.

Another name for Athlete’s foot is tinea pedis. The fungus lives in many places like gym floors, swimming pools, and so on; it is also found in socks and clothes. It is contagious and is spread by contact.

Majority of people experienced fungus at least once in their lives. Though, for the fungus to activate it requires proper conditions like moisture and warmth.

Athlete’s foot is recognized by itching and burning. The fungus influences the skin and makes it peel or even evoke cracking pain and even bleeding. In other cases infection does not show at all.

The condition is usually found on both soles of the feet but in some cases it can spread to sides and top of the feet. The spaces between toes can also become infected.

Athlete’s foot can affect both feet and sometimes hands. Infection that influences hands has a name of tinea manuum and the reason of its action has not been completely studied yet.

The treatment of the condition includes two stages. First of all is presupposes proper hygiene in the part of body that has infection. This means keeping your feet dry and clean and in comfortable footwear. Secondly, some medications like antifungal creams and washes should be applied (i.e. miconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, and ketoconazole).
